Frequently Asked Questions

Q
Q. I would like to start ballet, but I’ve been told that I’m too inflexible. Should I stretch a lot before starting?
A
Incorrect stretching can be very dangerous.Outdated stretching methods that were commonly used in the past are no longer considered appropriate in today’s ballet training. What is most important is not excessive stretching, but developing the correct strength alongside proper, safe stretching techniques.Strength and flexibility are deeply connected — in fact, true flexibility is supported by strength.Limited flexibility is often the result of insufficient muscular strength, not simply “tightness.”Even without forcing dangerous stretches, flexibility will improve naturally through consistent and proper ballet training. As students continue their lessons, their bodies develop safely, and flexibility increases over time.
Q
If I want to learn ballet as a hobby, is it okay to take fewer lessons?
A
At Soki Ballet International, even students who aspire to become professional dancers are required to have at least one to two rest days each week.Progress depends not simply on the number of lessons, but on the quality and content of the training. Therefore, taking fewer classes can still lead to steady improvement. As your child’s interest, strength, and stamina develop, the number of lessons may be increased gradually. However, we always emphasize the importance of proper rest and ensure that every student maintains rest days to support healthy and safe development.

Rest and recovery are essential parts of professional ballet training.
Q
Is it possible for students to participate in ballet competitions?
A
At Soki Ballet International, we have participated in many ballet competitions throughout our 29-year history; however, participation is never required.Today, there are countless competitions, and unfortunately, some do not align with our educational philosophy. When selecting competitions, we carefully choose only those that support the healthy development of each child and provide meaningful opportunities for their future. We prioritize competitions that offer valuable experiences such as scholarships to international ballet schools and constructive feedback from respected judges. We generally avoid competitions that focus solely on rankings without offering educational value or artistic guidance. This is because we believe the most important goal is not simply to compete, but to grow.

At Soki Ballet International, we view competitions as a tool for growth — not the purpose of training.
Q
I’ve heard that anatomy is incorporated into your lessons. Could you tell me more about this?
A
“General anatomy” and “ballet anatomy” are not the same. There is a common misconception that simply studying anatomy will prevent injuries. However, this is not entirely true.At Soki Ballet International, we do not offer separate classroom-based anatomy lectures. Instead, students develop practical anatomical understanding naturally through consistent ballet training.Ballet training itself is built upon highly logical and efficient body mechanics. By gradually integrating anatomical awareness into regular lessons, students learn how to move correctly and safely. This understanding also helps students gain better control of their bodies, not only in ballet, but in their daily lives. Our ultimate goal is not only to help students dance ballet, but to help them develop a healthy, well-balanced body through proper training supported by anatomical awareness. This is why anatomy is incorporated into our teaching.
Q
バレエを習いたいのですが、身体が硬いと無理と言われます。ストレッチをたくさんするべきですか?
A
